Nerdy about… Macs vs PCs

mac-vs-pc1

Oh the endless debate over whether to get a Mac or a PC. The Mac devotees denounce PCs as being outdated and riddled with security issues (thank you Microsoft) while PC users insist Macs are too expensive to reasonably maintain. Everybody has their preference and the choice you make really depends on what you plan on using your computer for. Whatever you do, just don’t base your decision on those silly “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” commercials!

Even though I’ve been a lifelong PC user, I personally prefer Macs for this simple reason: the majority of the world’s viruses are coded for PCs. The interface of the Mac OS is quite secure compared to Microsoft’s joke of an operating system that’s riddled with more security holes than a badly guarded military base. After my last PC died a slow, crippling death due to getting infected with the HIV of computer viruses (along with God knows how many Trojans, Worms, etc) I swore I’d buy a Mac as soon as I could afford one. A lot of my friends are hardcore Mac users, one of which is an expert in Macs (hiya Andrew!) They’ve not had any of the problems I’ve endured with my PCs in the past decade.

I have my reasons for wanting to make the jump from PCs and become an Apple “dick-rider”. Mostly, it’s to to do with security and stability, whereas others just want a Mac because it’s considered hip. Toshibas look boring compared to that cutesy Apple logo on the front of the white polycarbonate or silver aluminum casing. However, let’s be real here: quite a few people buy Apple products to have the latest thing. They aren’t interested in graphic design or because they prefer how Macs work over PCs regarding the aforementioned stability and security et al. They just want to look cool. Dumb ass hipsters. If that’s your only reason for paying top dollar for a Mac, I suggest you go to your bathroom and flush the money down the toilet. Or better yet, give it to me! I’ll put it to good use!

While Macs have their supporters, there’s also a large anti-Mac community bent on hating the little fruity company. Mind you, there are a few pros about owning a PC. They’re far more suitable for upgrades. You have the freedom to tweak the hardware of a PC whereas Apple holds the reins very tightly on changes done to their products, not to mention, it’s expensive as hell. Modifications are a tad harder to achieve with Macs, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. Gaming is also better on the PC than a Mac. However, you’re more likely a computer engineer or someone who works on computers as a hobby if you’re concerned about seriously modifying your system. As for gaming, you probably own a PC system more expensive than any Mac on the market if you’re that into your computer gaming.

People who list thoroughly researched (and correct) points to owning a PC over a Mac have actually used both in their lifetime. They’ve done the work on which is better suited for their needs. They don’t just hate Apple as a company and everything it stands for simply because it’s the trendy thing to do. Not like this guy who must have been molested by an Apple employee as a child. The dude acts like Steve Jobs is a false prophet heading up a cult with his loyal and misguided underlings who drink the Kool-Aid on everything he does regardless whether it’s positive or not. Well, SOME Apple lovers do that, but not all of them are that easily swayed. I do agree with him on a couple things that have been common knowledge for years but most of this guy’s points are wrong. He’s just parroting the same crap as others in the anti-Mac brigade.

Here’s the thing with a computer: buy what’s right for you. Don’t let anyone lead you to believe a Mac is cooler than a PC or vice versa. Do your research, make a list of the top three things you will do with your computer the majority of the time. Are hardrive space and RAM more important to you or are you more concerned with being able to use your computer for visually creative things? For me personally, I want a Mac because it’s been proven that it works better for the things I want to do. Every PC I’ve ever owned has security problems. My Mac friends don’t have that problem. Over Memorial Day, I bought a Dell Inspiron 14R with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hardrive with Windows 7 (and it was SO not my idea.) Sounds great, but I sweat bullets every time I surf the Internet or open an email. The hardrive on my old Dell crashed and I lost EVERYTHING. Every script and short story I’ve ever written, every picture and video, all of it, gone. I was under financial constraints and needed a new comp right away, so I settled on the Memorial Day sale at Best Buy and bought another PC. I honestly had no choice. I can’t wait until next year when I can finally buy my Mac. I won’t have to put up with the b.s. I do with PCs. In total, I’m an Apple dick-rider and proud of it!
