Nerdy about… DVDs
Speaking of dvd shopping, I have a problem with it. My dvd collection is BEYOND ridiculous. We’re talking around 500 at last count and that was a year and a half ago! The collection is quite varied. Romantic comedies, horror, sci-fi, action, drama, foreign, etc. Friends know to just get me gift certificates to places I can purchase more dvds when it’s my birthday or Christmas. Most of the collection consists of dvds that I purchased used. Again, no shame in used dvds!
I’ve really built my collection up since having all my dvds stolen 9 years ago in college. I’m still pissed about that. Hope they got raided by the FBI for piracy on LimeWire! I have grown more careful with my collection/investment. The movies I buy are generally films that only nerds like me would like. Such as a French/Italian language film called Farinelli or the Spanish language film Like Water For Chocolate. Both of these films were romantic dramas made in the mid-90s when I was in my early teens. I loved these films then. Yeah, I was not your normal teenager.
Not to worry, I also have the basic movie collection staples. Since my favorite genre is horror, I absolutely had to add the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre to my collection. I grew up on Nightmare on Elm Street, so Freddy found his way onto my already packed shelf.
Despite my highbrow foreign films and my “cool” horror and action films, I’m most embarrassed by my love of romantic comedies. For every Exorcist and Full Metal Jacket, I own You’ve Got Mail or My Best Friend’s Wedding type of film. Rom-coms are a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes, they’re totally predictable and cheesy, but the genre used to be quite fun. Not like the shit they’re churning out now (thanks to that bitch that deserted Grey’s Anatomy).
Everyone has a friend like me that has a bonafide video store in their house. At least you know who to go to when you want to borrow movies! That’s… IF I let you!
