I'll admit, I didn't watch a lot of the first season of American Horror Story. Don't get me wrong, I liked the show. Once again, my extremely busy schedule a year ago made it difficult for me to keep up with the show. What I did watch, I liked. A lot. It was actually scary. While I love The Walking Dead for its characters (and zombies) it lacks the straight up horror and scares that American Horror Story excels at. AHS has a Polanski-esque vibe about it. Jessica Lange is diabolical and proves why she is such an amazing actress. Her character alone in the first season scared me. She is even better in the second season.
The show is going down a different road than most series. It finishes up the storyline in one season and cycles to a totally different story the next with completely new characters. This one takes place in a mental asylum in the 60s. Jessica Lange plays a nurse who is, for lack of a better term, an evil bitch. Several others from the first season return in new roles and we have James Cromwell and Joseph Fiennes added to the cast. Lots of strong actors in this season!
The premiere episode lived up to the previous season's reputation. It gave me those thrills and chills I like so much and then some. Mostly, I was mesmerized by Jessica Lange and James Cromwell's characters. Lange plays a psychotic nurse with a cause to rid her mental patients of evil with the help of God while Cromwell plays a doctor back from retirement with a secret agenda. They play their characters with such zeal that it's frightening to watch them. This season is already to shaping up to be amazing. Also, Maroon 5's Adam Levine in a sex scene? Oh, yes, please!
